Ten authors to see at the 2017 Miami Book Fair

The 34th annual Miami Book Fair returns to the streets of Downtown with more than 450 authors across all genres, including fiction, nonfiction and children’s literature. The weeklong event, which culminates in a weekend street fair, features exclusive presentations by venerated literary figures, as well as pop-culture personalities and first-time novelists. Here is a look at this year’s most anticipated readings. (Note: unless otherwise stated, events take place at the Chapman Conference Center, 300 NE Second Avenue).

Dan Rather, What Unites Us: Reflections on Patriotism

CBS journalist Dan Rather opens the 34th annual edition of the Miami Book Fair with a discussion on patriotism and politics. His collection of original essays, What Unites Us, is an essential read for anyone swept up in the current national conversation. Tickets to his presentation include a copy of his book. Nov 12 at 6pm; $35.

Patti Smith, Devotion (Why I Write)

The award-winning singer-songwriter, visual artist and author shares insight into her own creative process in her latest book, Devotion (Why I Write). Get inspired listening to this consummate artist reveal secrets of her craft. Your ticket includes a copy of Smith’s book. Nov 13 at 8pm; $35.

Isabel Allende, In the Midst of Winter

The best-selling author (House of Spirits, Paula) latest work of fiction follows three characters from 1970s Chile and Brazil to present-day Brooklyn. Admission to Allende’s presentation includes a copy of her book. Nov 15 at 6pm; $40.

An Evening With Barbara Pierce Bush and Jenna Bush

Get to know the Bush twins during an intimate conversation with Barbara and Jenna. Hear the two discuss their new book, Sisters First: Stories from Our Wild and Wonderful Life, and share stories about growing up in the White House. Nov 16 at 6pm; $15.

Jason Segel and Kristen Miller, Otherworld

Actor-cum-author Jason Segel and his coauthor, Kristen Miller, present their young-adult fiction novel about a virtual game that allows players to live their best lives in an alternative reality called Otherworld. Nov 17 at 9:30am; free with RSVP.

Joe Biden: An American Promise Tour

The former vice president sits down to discuss his new memoir, Promise Me, Dad: A Year of Hope, Hardship, and Purpose, as part of this year’s Miami Book Fair. Hear the lifetime public servant speak candidly about his time in the White House, his son’s tragic passing and his affinity for aviator sunglasses and ice cream. This event takes place at the Arsht Center. Nov 18 at 7pm; $36.

Jeffrey Eugenides, Fresh Complaints

The Pulitzer-winning author (and Oprah’s Book Club regular) introduces his latest tome, Fresh Complaints. This collection of essays, some of which were previously published, presents an array of characters experiencing a personal crisis. Nov 19 at 2pm; free.

Al Franken, Al Franken: Giant of the Senate

Senator Al Franken, who most will recognize from his time on Saturday Night Life, closes the book fair with a presentation on his new, candid memoir. Hear him speak frankly on life in the public eye, both as a comedian and politician. Nov 19 at 6pm; free with RSVP.
