Dog owners, bacon lovers, organic farmers—it seems every group has its own dedicated app these days. Adding to the growing list is Saltmates, a new Miami-based app for people who care about the ocean.

Yacht captain Nolan Brady and advertising creative director David Alvarez co-created the social media platform for people living in coastal cities to connect, share information about local events and discuss environmental issues. “I’ve lived in South Beach for almost 10 years and was constantly affected by the rising sea level. It even made me late to work sometimes,” says Alvarez, referring to the area’s persistent flooding due to tide swell. Now app users faced with similar issues can share status updates and photos with others in the same boat, literally.

While the app is free to download, users interested in promoting events (think beach cleanups and marine fundraisers) will be charged $0.99, of which a portion will be donated to ocean conservation efforts.

Saltmates’ first event: the app’s official launch party on February 11, where they’ll unveil ocean-themed murals by four Miami artists. The large-format pieces, commissioned in partnership with PangeaSeed’s Sea Wall public art initiative, aim to address South Florida’s growing sea-level problem.

Need a date for the launch party? Lucky for you, there’s an app for that.
