Cantina Leon, a vibrant new restaurant in Coral Gables, is set to open its doors on May 21, delivering a contemporary homage to the golden era of Mexican cantinas.

Founded by the acclaimed Chef Gerardo B. De Negri in partnership with Jorge Barrera and operated by The Rabbit Group, Cantina Leon brings the soul of Mexico City to Ponce de Leon Boulevard. The 7,500-square-foot, multi-level space, designed by Maxielle De Jesus of DESIGNXTUDIO INC., blends 1920s post-Porfiriato charm with modern luxury. The scene is set with soaring ceilings, plush green velvet banquettes and a striking central bar that serves as the room’s social anchor.

The menu, crafted by Chef Negri and Chef de Cuisine Jorge Delgadillo, reimagines traditional recipes through a modern lens. Seafood lovers can indulge in the Torre de Mariscos or the Shrimp Aguachile Tatemado, while those seeking heartier fare can enjoy the Pescado Zarandeado or the dramatic Filete Flameado al Tequila. For a true spectacle, the giant black tiger prawns are flambéed tableside with mezcal and garlic butter.

“At Cantina Leon, every dish is meant to bring people together,” says Chef Negri. “This restaurant is deeply personal to me because it reflects the way I grew up experiencing food in Mexico, around family, friends, music, conversation, and celebration. We want guests to feel the warmth and soul of Mexico in every part of the experience.”

The beverage program is equally ambitious, starring a dedicated tequila and mezcal tasting room. Signature cocktails like the Oaxacan Jarrito and the espresso-based Carajillo complement the bold flavors of the kitchen.

Beyond the main dining room, the concept includes Mercadito Cantina Leon, a sister café offering daily breakfast, specialty coffees and grab-and-go tacos for a more casual experience. The atmosphere shifts in the evenings, with live entertainment starting at 7pm from Wednesday through Sunday, ensuring the energy of Mexico is felt long into the night.

Whether for a milestone celebration or a casual happy hour, Cantina Leon aims to be a place that "turns strangers into regulars and regulars into family."

Cantina Leon opens on May 21 at 2955 Ponce de Leon Blvd. in Coral Gables.
