Here’s how some Miami restaurants are pledging to kick the plastic habit in 2018

In case today’s drastic winter chill hasn’t tipped you off: climate change is real. The culprit, among many, is pollution. And some of the biggest offenders of unnecessary waste are restaurants—providing to-go cups, leftover containers and disposable straws is actually a nuisance to the environment.

But a new initiative aims to curb our carelessness. Miami Is Not Plastic is a citywide campaign created to reduce the use of single-use plastic across the local hospitality, marine and recreation industries. Rusty Pelican, Whiskey Joe’s and the Rickenbacker Marina are among several Key Biscayne businesses joining the effort by eliminating the use of styrofoam and plastic materials and replacing them with ocean-friendly alternatives such as recycled paper, bamboo, stainless steel or glass.

Miami Is Not Plastic kicks off at Rusty Pelican on Wednesday, January 10, at 6:30pm with an educational cocktail party, if you will, where guests are invited to meet ecofriendly vendors and hear from speakers on ways to participate (free to attend with RSVP). Bacardi cocktails, appetizers and complimentary metal straws make going green all that more fun.
