While the county awaits Mayor Gimenez’s confirmation that businesses will be allowed to reopen in phase one on May 18, the city of Miami Beach already has a plan in place.

This morning, City Manager Jimmy Morales announced a two-part plan for a phase-one reopening. In the first stage, museums, retail shops, grooming facilities (like barbershops) and salons—a total of 761 businesses—will be allowed to reopen on May 20. Given the relatively short notice, officials will take a proactive approach to educate operators on compliance. They’ll be providing collateral, visiting locations to answer questions and offering preliminary inspections to ensure venues are ready to welcome customers by next week.

Stage two of phase one will see restaurants and sidewalk cafes resuming business on May 27, just after Memorial Day. For these, Miami Beach has provided detailed guidelines, such as the need for disposable menus and plexiglass barriers at counters. Outdoor seating will be key and possible street closures may be allowed to accommodate for the extra space, specifically on Washington Avenue and Ocean Drive. Commissioners will be voting on this Wednesday afternoon.

While the city awaits specific guidelines from the county, Morales said his proposed reopening plan will be consistent with what Miami-Dade recommends. Still, the question on everyone’s mind—especially folks who’ve spent a few minutes outside lately—is when the beaches will reopen. That, however, is still to be determined. Though with marinas now open, maybe it’s time to finally splurge on that boat you’ve been thinking about?
