Miami Spice has officially arrived. Each week we’ll be zeroing in on a specific restaurant we think deserves to be on your Spice hit list. This week: Bazaar Mar by José Andrés.

At this point in his culinary career, José Andrés is anything but an underground sensation. The Spanish chef is known around the world for his delicious, inventive dishes that are as fun to eat as they are to look at. So, you’ve hopefully heard of the second of his two Miami restaurants: Bazaar Mar at the SLS Brickell. If you’ve never been, we understand. It’s a tad pricey on a normal day. But the restaurant’s $39 prix-fixe menu is the excuse you needed. Few Spice menus can compare to Bazaar Mar, which lets you pick from a staggering eight appetizers and six entree options—all the sort of eccentric bites Andrés is known for. Thankfully, dessert is listed simply as “José’s Sweet Surprise.” This is a beautiful restaurant with a truly unique menu that many Miamians haven’t been lucky enough to experience. This, dear friends, is exactly why Miami Spice exists.

When to go: The Miami Spice menu is offered for dinner only, Tuesday through Thursday, from 6pm to 10pm, and Friday and Saturday, from 6pm to 11pm.

What to order: For the appetizer, we love what Andrés does with the Bagel and Lox, which comes in the shape of a little fish draped in smoked salmon (you can’t see the cream cheese, but it’s there—trust us). For the entree, go with the fried snapper. This showstopper arrives at the table crispy and fried whole.

Why we love it: Each mouthful is a surprise—literally. Things pop and gush and hidden ingredients are often only revealed once you take your first bite.

You’ll save: A little over $15. A small bite, decent entree and dessert would run you about $55 on a normal night.
