A striking new restaurant is opening on the waterfront in Brickell next month. Dallas standout The Mexican, which earned a Prix Versailles designation as one of the World’s Most Beautiful Restaurants, is expanding for the first time, bringing authentic Northern Mexican cuisine and stunning design to Miami.

The restaurant is the vision of Monterrey-born entrepreneur Roberto González Alcalá. Following the success of the acclaimed Dallas flagship, he’s bringing the same core idea to Miami but on a larger, more theatrical scale. The space spans more than 10,000 square feet and can host over 330 guests across indoor dining rooms, private spaces and terraces that stretch toward Biscayne Bay.

Design plays a central role in the experience. Interior architect Paulina Morán, who also designed the Dallas location, has filled the space with art, materials and furniture sourced from Monterrey. Guests arrive through towering golden double doors and step into a tequila gallery lined with hundreds of rare bottles. At the center of the room, a sculptural heart installation made from geometric forms acts as a visual anchor.

Beyond the entry, the dining room opens up beneath dramatic circular ceiling installations crafted from layered wood slats that appear to float overhead. Limestone archways create softly lit dining alcoves, while geometric tile floors nod to classic Mexican patterns. By day, floor-to-ceiling windows frame sweeping views of Biscayne Bay and the Brickell skyline. By night, the space shifts into a warm, amber-lit dining room. Outside, the restaurant continues along the waterfront with a second bar, covered patio seating and a terrace that steps down toward the water.

In the kitchen, Northern Mexican flavors take the lead. The menu blends heritage recipes with modern technique and premium ingredients. Dishes include Barbacoa de Arrachera, a slow-cooked skirt steak inspired by traditional barbacoa, and Ribeye Aguachile layered with avocado, radish and dried piquín chile. Lobster Elote offers a rich spin on street corn with Maine lobster, roasted corn, crema and Oaxacan cheese, while vegetable-focused plates like roasted cauliflower with truffle and habanero ash round out the lineup.

The drinks are just as creative. Margaritas range from fruit-forward options like La Niña Fresa with strawberry and ginger to ultra-premium versions made with aged tequila.

The Mexican aims to deliver a full experience where food, art and hospitality come together on one of Miami’s most scenic waterfronts when it opens at 601 Brickell Key Drive in early April. Reservations will be available via OpenTable beginning March 15. Stay up to date by following The Mexican on Instagram @themexican.miami.
