If you live in Miami, you know that eating at Katana Japanese Restaurant has two requirements: a serious craving for nigiri and the patience of a saint. For 33 years, this tiny, family-owned gem in North Miami Beach has been famous for its delicious, affordable sushi, its charming miniature wooden boats that float your dinner right to you and, most notoriously, its legendary two-hour wait times.

But fans in South Miami who traveled far for their fix can now rejoice. Katana has officially opened its highly anticipated second location at 1760 SW 22nd St on Coral Way, bringing its beloved "sushi-go-round" concept much closer to home.

Since 1993, Katana has been a local favorite, and rite of passage. While modern restaurants rely on high-tech conveyor belts, Katana keeps it beautifully old-school: colorful plates of sushi, sashimi and tempura drift lazily around a 24-seat counter on little wooden boats. You grab what catches your eye, stack your empty plates and pay by color at the end. It’s simple, nostalgic and so deeply woven into Miami's culture that the city officially declared May 6, 2026, as "Katana Day."

Before now, convincing your friends in Brickell, Coral Gables, Coconut Grove or Little Havana to trek all the way up to Normandy Isles for dinner was a tough sell or at least required a good bit of planning. The new central location dramatically shortens the voyage, allowing a whole new neighborhood of diners to experience the magic without planning their entire night around a cross-county road trip.

More than just a win for sushi lovers, this expansion is a beautiful milestone for a local family business. Founded over three decades ago by an immigrant father with no prior restaurant experience but "a whole lot of American dream," Katana has evolved from a hidden neighborhood secret into a true South Florida institution.

So, ready your chopsticks and head down to Coral Way. Your meal still might require waiting in line, but at least the drive will be shorter!
