Ever wonder how Buzz Lightyear got his slick, space-age flight moves, or why Sulley’s fur looks so impossibly soft you just want to hug the screen? Starting Saturday, October 10, 2026, the Phillip and Patricia Frost Museum of Science in Miami is pulling back the curtain on movie magic with The Science Behind Pixar, a blockbuster interactive exhibition running through April 11, 2027.
Created by the Museum of Science, Boston and Pixar Animation Studios, this hands-on showcase reveals the brilliant blend of science, technology, engineering, art and math (STEAM)—plus a generous splash of pure imagination—behind every touching story and memorable character.
Spanning eight stations, the exhibit walks visitors through Pixar’s production pipeline. You'll get to learn about and test your skills at Modeling, Rigging, Surfaces, Sets & Cameras, Animation, Simulation, Lighting and Rendering. In the Sets & Cameras section, you can tweak camera angles for a bug’s-eye view straight out of A Bug’s Life. The Rigging section lets you see how virtual skeletons allow animators to strike a character's perfect pose.
In the Lighting section, you can tackle the sneaky math problems involved in illuminating the deep ocean for Finding Nemo. Over in Surfaces, you'll discover the clever digital trickery used to give characters their distinctive textures, colors and shine.
Beyond the screen-based puzzles and physical activities, the exhibition offers plenty of irresistible photo ops. You can snap pics alongside life-sized recreations of fan favorites, including Buzz Lightyear, Dory, Mike and Sulley, WALL•E and the fabulous Edna Mode.
Whether you are a budding animator, a tech enthusiast or simply a fan of Pixar, The Science Behind Pixar turns complex computer science into an unforgettable playground of creation and beloved characters. Admission is included with all general Frost Science tickets. The exhibit opens October 10, 2026.
