Orlando’s most tropical escape is about to take an extended break. Universal’s Volcano Bay will close for a massive refurbishment set to last five months, from October 26, 2026, through March 24, 2027. It's one of the longest downtimes in the water park’s history, but fans hope the improvements will be worth the wait.

Volcano Bay has been open since 2017, so this isn’t your standard seasonal touch-up. Universal is keeping quiet about exactly what’s happening behind Krakatau, but the timeline suggests something much bigger than fresh paint and pool filters.

The closure hits during a prime travel window, covering fall break and the heart of Orlando’s mild winter season, when many visitors from colder climates come specifically to thaw out and float down the lazy river. During those months, however, the crashing waves and careening coasters will go silent.

When it opened, Volcano Bay redefined what a water park could be. Built around the towering 200-foot Krakatau volcano, it replaced the beloved-but-dated Wet ‘n Wild with a blend of resort vibes, Polynesian theming and next-gen attractions. Rides like the Krakatau Aqua Coaster, Ko’okiri Body Plunge and TeAwa The Fearless River set a new standard for thrills and technology, earning Volcano Bay top billing in countless “best water park” lists.

But even the most advanced parks need a reset. Volcano Bay’s complex water systems—from its wave pools to its cutting-edge ride launches—require heavy maintenance, and Universal usually closes the park briefly during the cooler months for upkeep. But a five month closure? That signals a full-blown overhaul.

The news is already being felt. Some temporary closures have ben announced. In a bigger move, Universal has paused sales and renewals of its 3-Park Annual Passes, which include access to Volcano Bay alongside Universal Studios Florida and Islands of Adventure. Current passholders will keep their access once Volcano Bay reopens, though Universal hasn’t said whether there’ll be extensions or perks to make up for the downtime. Still, the pass pause hints that Universal could be cooking up a refreshed pass program to debut alongside the park’s return.

Universal hasn’t shared specifics, but the possibilities point to something big. Fans are speculating about everything from ride refurbishments and water filtration upgrades to full-on reimaginings of certain areas. With Epic Universe, Universal’s massive new theme park, set to open around the same time, it makes sense for the company to want every corner of its resort to be in top shape.

Perhaps as a parting gift, Volcano Bay revived its popular Volcano Bay Nights, an after-hours event featuring DJs, games and character meet-and-greets. But for now, all eyes are on next year.

If you’re planning an Orlando getaway in late 2026 or early 2027, schedule it around the closure or pivot to Universal’s two other parks, which will remain open. By spring 2027, Volcano Bay should be back and better than ever, refreshed for a new era of sun, slides and splashdowns.

So get your last lazy river laps in, because come late October 2026, Krakatau goes quiet.
