Most habits, like our aversion to using turn signals (because Miami), are tough to break. Others not-so-great tendencies, such as our bank-account-draining Uber Eats routine, are easier to quit. Next week, James Beard Award-winning chef Norman Van Aken and his partner Candace Walsh rescue us from the latter with their new culinary academy in Wynwood.

In the Kitchen With Norman Van Aken opens to the public on Monday, June 4, in a space adjacent to his restaurant Three, and rooftop bar, No. 3 Social. It’s got a beautiful, roomy kitchen with lots of shiny new appliances where up to 16 students can learn a range of cooking skills. The curriculum is designed for the home cook and for the culinary curious, with classes ranging from basic techniques and pastry skills to more interactive experiences like food pairings and wine tastings. Instructors will also be a varied bunch and include Van Aken as well as other notable chefs, farmers, cheese makers and sommeliers.

In the Kitchen boasts a small shop for specialized kitchen tools, custom aprons (yep, that’s a thing) and a library of Van Aken’s cookbooks that’s ideal for those of us who’d rather drink wine and chat than take notes. The full schedule of classes goes live on Monday and prices will hover in the $75 to $150 range, inclusive of all necessary food and equipment to send you home feeling like the next Top Chef.
