Everything you need to know about visiting downtown Miami's Area 31 Restaurant (270 Biscayne Blvd Way).
Even if it didn’t boast one of the city’s most spectacular views—the Miami skyline is laid out in front of you from the 16th floor of the EPIC Hotel—Executive Chef Wolfgang Birk’s innovative seafood, much of it sourced from the waters you can gaze out upon, would surely be packing in the patrons. The menu changes regularly, but expect fresh ceviche, tartars and crudos. Also in keeping with the restaurant’s dedication to fresh and sustainable seafood is the range of entrées, featuring traditional proteins done up with a Spanish twist. Not to be missed is the swordfish served with a sweet corn chorizo salsa.
Fresh, sustainable seafood
Named after the sustainable fishing area in the Atlantic designated by the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization, Area 31 is committed to only serving food that upholds these standards (the restaurant is certified by the Monterey Bay Aquarium’s Seafood Watch). Locally sourced proteins and produce round out the menu offerings (herbs are grown right on the terrace!), which are complemented by seasonally inspired cocktails and organic wines.
Happy hour with a view
Area 31's beat-the-clock happy hour is one of Miami's most popular—it boasts one of the most impressive views of downtown Miami and Brickell Avenue. The deal begins at 5pm with $5 flutes of Taittinger Champagne and continues through to 11pm, increasing $1 for every hour that passes. Another reason to dash here after work? Watching the sun set over the Miami skyline from the 16th-floor rooftop bar.
