You never know what’s going to pop up in Wynwood: one minute you have a deserted parking and next thing you know a sprawling Mexican restaurant has sprouted out of seemingly nowhere. Bakan, with its nearly 7,000-square-foot space and more than 200 types of mescals, is the arty neighborhood’s fresh conspicuous tenant. Named for the Huastecan word for tortilla, Bakan is the place for excellent tacos and tostadas. The reason? Theirs are made with organic blue corn and rolled out with precision so that whether hard, soft or stuffed to the brim, your tortilla will not fall apart. You’ll find there’s also a mescal pairing for every dish (tortilla-based and otherwise) on the menu. The guide is color-coded and each dish is labeled with numerous options, making it impossible to screw it up no matter how many spicy margaritas you’ve had in Bakan’s stunning outdoor bar.
