Chef Raheem Sealey knows his way around a grill, and he leans all the way in at Shiso. The former executive chef at KYU and the brains behind smokehouse pop-up Drinking Pig BBQ (which opened its first restaurant in Coconut Grove in November 2025) leads the Asian smokehouse—alongside chef de cuisine Monika Dominguez—blending Japanese techniques with American barbecue and a dash of Caribbean flair, a nod to Sealey’s roots.
Shiso is sprawling: a massive indoor/outdoor rooftop restaurant whose vibes and menus shift accordingly. Inside the modern, graffiti-strewn dining room, a commanding center bar anchors the space, while the open kitchen is equally arresting. Observing the hushed and immaculate setup, you can only imagine the prep required to execute daily service. The bustling terrace is more laid-back, with regular DJs and an entirely separate bar menu catering to crowds with a variety of batched cocktails.
As with most BBQ spots, the menu at Shiso is meant to be shared—including the small, flavor-packed dishes like the umami-rich smoked brisket croquette and the miso cornbread: finger-sized rectangles topped generously with uni and ikura for the perfect sweet-and-savory bite. From the large plates, the smoked sticky ribs are a (messy) crowd-pleaser, while the Chilean sea bass swimming in a silky coconut curry is a sleeper hit (just be sure to order a side of white rice to soak up the extra broth). And if the boxed section of the menu didn’t already direct your attention to the standouts, don’t leave Shiso without trying one of the steaks or smoked meats—the build-your-own temaki short rib is a must.
