The fusion-restaurant trend is alive and well at Son Cubano, Coral Gables’s swanky, bi-level restaurant whose menu blends Cuban and Asian cuisine. Egg rolls taste more like deep-fried Cubanos while fresh tuna is served atop tostones rather than wonton chips, but you won’t be entirely without traditional Cuban fare: white rice, black beans and vaca frita, among other dishes, are neatly filed away in the menu’s criollo section. Portions are small (and relatively expensive), but most diners beeline to Son Cubano’s expansive bar anyway, namely for happy hour specials on weeknights (mojitos are just $4) and a front-row seat for Friday and Saturday night’s live jazz performances.
