Montreal braces for powerful winds as gusts near 90 km per hour

A monster storm is hitting the province and is bringing dangerous winds and a mix of snow and rain along with it.

Just when you thought 20 mm of rain was the worst of it, a special weather statement was issued this morning for Montreal.

According to Environment Canada, severe winds are forecast for Montreal this evening.

Southwesterly winds will reach up to 90 km per hour late this evening and then gusting to 50 km an hour overnight.

The weather alert goes on to warn Montrealers to secure loose objects, especially outdoor items.

As far as the weekend goes, the winds should become light with a mix of sun and cloud on Saturday.

Sunday could be either rain or snow, with windy periods.

March is the windiest month in Montréal, with average hourly winds reaching about 10.8 miles per hour. 

The calmest stretch of the year spans roughly five months, from mid-May to late October.
