Montreal public transit just got a little more convenient—for Android users.
Android users can now exclusively buy, store and validate OPUS transit fares directly on their phones through the Chrono app.
The Autorité régionale de transport métropolitain (ARTM) announced the new feature on September 15, giving Android users another way to pay for and access public transit across the metropolitan network.

Instead of carrying a physical OPUS card, users can purchase their transit fares through the Chrono app, keep them on their Android phone and validate them by tapping their device on the readers when boarding.
The physical OPUS card isn’t going anywhere, but Android users now have the option to leave it at home—and skip the trip to a station or retailer to purchase or reload their fares.

The new feature allows Android users to purchase transit fares through the Chrono app, store them on their phone and validate them directly at transit readers.
The launch builds on the growing popularity of digital OPUS services. According to the ARTM, more than half of OPUS card reloads are now completed digitally, representing more than 16 million transactions by transit users.
The new mobile option is part of Concerto, an ARTM project focused on making public transit easier to access and pay for, while creating a faster and more seamless experience for riders.

When will OPUS be available on iPhone?
For now, the mobile OPUS option is available on Android devices.
ARTM and Apple are continuing to work on bringing the feature to iPhone users. There is no launch date for iPhone yet.
ARTM is also working on introducing bank card payments across Montreal’s metropolitan public transit network, with more details expected to be announced later.
For Android users, however, the takeaway is immediate: your OPUS card can now live on your phone.
