November’s Beaver Moon will be lighting up the skies tonight.
The Beaver Moon 2025—November’s full moon—is expected to be the biggest and brightest Supermoon of the year.
This rare celestial event will make the moon appear larger and more luminous than usual, captivating sky-watchers across the city.
What time will the Beaver Moon appear?
Since the moon will be below the horizon at that moment, the best time to see it in Montreal will be on the evenings of November 4 and November 5.
The Beaver Moon will reach peak illumination on November 5, 2025, at 8:19 a.m. ET.
No need for a telescope or special equipment—just a clear sky for the best view.
According to the Weather Network, Montreal’s skies should be sunny and partly cloudy between 8 a.m. and 9 a.m. on November 5, 2025.
What Makes the Beaver Moon a Supermoon?
According to NASA, a Supermoon occurs when a full moon is at its closest point to Earth in its orbit.
Because the moon’s path around Earth isn’t a perfect circle, its distance varies.
When it reaches its nearest approach—just under 356,980 kilometres away—it can appear up to 14% bigger and 30% brighter than other full moons.
Why Is It Called the “Beaver Moon”?
The Beaver Moon gets its name from the time of year when beavers take shelter in their lodges after storing food for winter.
The name dates back to early North American traditions and the Old Farmer’s Almanac, which notes that this moon typically signals the onset of colder weather.
What Other Supermoons Are Coming This Year?
The first Supermoon of 2025 appeared in October, and the next one is expected in December.
Earlier this year, sky-watchers also witnessed a blood moon lunar eclipse in September, when Earth’s shadow temporarily darkened the full moon.
