U.S. Customs and Border Protection temporarily suspended operations at Montréal-Trudeau International Airport on Wednesday, forcing the cancellation of around 20 U.S.-bound flights.
According to the airport, the disruption was caused by a strong odour from nearby construction materials.

What happened in Montreal airport today?
A construction odour has caused U.S. flight cancellations in Montreal.
In a statement shared on social media Wednesday morning, airport officials said every effort was being made to restore U.S. Customs operations as quickly as possible.
The statement on the YUL Aéroport International Montréal-Trudeau website states:
"USCBP operations are gradually resuming. However, passengers should expect delays. The temporary suspension was caused by the odour of varnish associated with painting work. While the odour may have been unpleasant, it did not pose any health risk. We thank passengers for their patience and understanding
Customs and Border Protection (USCBP) has temporarily suspended its operations due to an odour from construction materials. As a result, several flights to the United States have been cancelled. Every effort is being made to resume operations as quickly as possible. Passengers are encouraged to check the status of their flight with their airline before travelling to the airport. Does the strong smell pose a health risk?
According to a report by the CBC, a spokesperson for Montréal-Trudeau Airport said ventilation in the affected area has been increased. The Montreal Fire Department also inspected the site and determined that the odour does not pose a health risk.
Travellers heading to the United States are being urged to check their flight status with their airline before leaving for the airport, as additional delays and cancellations remain possible.

The disruption comes as Montréal-Trudeau Airport undergoes a $10-billion redevelopment project.
Major construction is expected to continue over the next decade as the airport carries out one of the largest infrastructure transformations in its history.
