VIA Rail invests $150 million to modernize sleeper cars, enhancing passenger comfort

Train travel in Canada is about to get a lot more comfortable.

VIA Rail Canada is embarking on a $150-million modernization program for its entire fleet of 56 Château and Manor sleeper cars over the next five years, underscoring its commitment to enhancing the passenger experience and strengthening Canada’s long-distance rail service.

CAD Railway Industries, based in Lachine, Québec, has been chosen to upgrade key systems and interiors, boosting comfort, reliability, and onboard amenities for travelers aboard VIA Rail’s iconic routes, The Ocean and The Canadian.

The initiative is set to create more than 100 skilled jobs in engineering, project management, and specialized trades, fueling economic growth in Greater Montréal while reinforcing Canada’s rail manufacturing and maintenance capabilities.

VIA Rail will gradually renew its long-distance, regional, and remote network trains, with procurement for new locomotives and passenger cars already underway.

According to a press release, this sleeper car modernization ensures passengers continue to enjoy a high-quality, comfortable, and reliable travel experience during the transition.

Alongside these upgrades, VIA Rail continues to invest in its maintenance centres, balancing in-house expertise with partnerships that prioritize Canadian industry. 

Most of VIA Rail’s procurement spending goes to Canadian suppliers, reinforcing domestic skills, supporting local jobs, and contributing to national economic growth.
