This extraordinary play, widely regarded as Friel’s masterpiece, is the study of five unmarried sisters who live in a modest cottage in Donegal, Ireland. On the threshold of fall 1936, the household revolves around the eight year old love-child Michael, his charming yet unreliable father Gerry, and the Mundy brother priest, Uncle Jack, recently returned from 25 years in a leper colony in Uganda. The sisters both celebrate and clash as the autumnal fires celebrating the Harvest God, Lugh, bathe the high grasses in golden light. All is offered as a series of memories woven together by Michael, now a grown man and an external narrator. Infused by dream music, Lughnasa captures in simple, everyday moments swelling tensions between desire and duty, ritual and religion, and celebration and loss. Movie stars Meryl Streep.
