The event creator says
FMRL Arts is proud to present an evening with master flutist, composer, improviser, and inventor Robert Dick.

On his way to teaching a masterclass and recital at MTSU this Thursday, Robert Dick will be performing at Portland Brew 12 South, along with some other local improvisers.

Over the past 30 Years, Robert Dick has revolutionized the role of the flute in modern music, in both his role as a composer and an improviser. As a composer, he's been the recipient of many esteemed fellowships and commissions, and has taught masterclasses at hundreds of universities around the world. As an improviser, his projects have involved collaborations with Steve Lacy, George Grawe, Evan Parker, Malcolm Goldstein, John Zorn and a general Who's Who of American and European improvisers.

Robert Dick is a true innovator in his use of extended techniques for the flute, including overblowing, vocalising, multiphonics, and tongue stops, allowing him a full palette of musical effects, including percussion and bass. Critically-acclaimed reviews of his solo performances have likened them to the experience of listening to a full orchestra. His own invented Glissando Head Joint allows a sliding mouthpiece to change the column of air in the instrument at will, producing "whammy bar" effects, which he often uses to play Jimi Hendrix and other modern works.

With thanks to MTSU for bringing him to Tennessee, FMRL is happy to be able to present an informal, intimate evening of music from this master musician.
