Come march behind our banner!
The Nashville Feminist Collective will be participating in the Power Together Tennessee march in solidarity with the Women’s March on Washington on January 21st. We would like to share why we’re participating and to invite you to march with us as a group behind our NFC banner.
We realize there has been controversy and much needed critique over the march in DC. There is a great history that explains it well here: http://www.aaihs.org/the-long-history-of-black-womens-exclusion-in-historic-marches-in-washington. In response to the feedback, the Nashville march has changed their name from Women’s March to Power Together TN. We think this was a move that signaled inclusivity and an ability to listen and adapt. The speakers will be almost all women of color. This is another indicator that the march is centering the right voices. We are excited for the opportunity to bring new people into the movement for gender equity. We think this march will be an entry point of many into activism, and we hope to be there to capture the energy and direct it into ongoing organizing efforts.
We will have a table where we will be selling buttons, t-shirts, and zines and a member of our steering committee, Briana Perry, is one of the confirmed speakers at the rally. We will also be teaching “Feminist Activism in Tennessee 101” at the teach-in after the march.
