Poverty, Inc. | Belmont University says

What does it look like when good intentions are outweighed by negative impact?

Belmont students have a reputation for giving back to the community. Through avenues such as volunteer work, fundraising, mission trips, and benefit concerts, we consistently seek solutions to problems like poverty, entrepreneurship, and orphan care. However, such charity can in fact have negative effects on those being helped. In what ways may the international adoption industry actually be hurting children and families? How helpful, in the long run, are the donations of organizations like TOMs Shoes to poor countries?

Poverty, Inc. draws from over 200 interviews filmed in 20 countries to explore questions like these. This screening of the award-winning documentary will be followed by a panel discussion and Q&A with Belmont professors, prominent Nashvillians, and social justice thinkers that will aid us in considering together the relationship between the plight of poverty and our human propensity toward generosity.
