Modris Eksteins, an award-winning teacher and author, is Professor Emeritus of History at the University of Toronto. Born in Riga, Latvia, he studied at the universities of Toronto, Heidelberg, and Oxford. Among his books are "The Limits of Reason" (1975), "Walking Since Daybreak" (1999), and "Solar Dance" (2012). His cultural history of World War I, "Rites of Spring" (1989), has been translated into many languages, most recently Korean and Chinese. The "Literary Review of Canada" ranked it among the 100 most important books ever published in Canada.
