VAYLA New Orleans is partnering with the National Queer Asian Pacific Islander Alliance (NQAPIA) on a press conference on the steps of the Federal Courthouse to protest Gov. Jindal’s support of the lawsuit to stop Obama’s Immigration Executive Actions.

Speakers, including community leaders, LGBT activists, and immigrants will demand immediate implementation of President Obama’s Immigration Executive Actions. The actions expanded the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program and created a new Deferred Action for Parental Accountability (DAPA). The programs could help up to 5 million undocumented immigrants, many of whom are LGBT and/or Asian, to come out of the shadows.

The press conference is part of “RiseUp!” NQAPIA’s National Week of Action on Immigrants’ Rights. From April 12-18, 2015, LGBTQ Asian, South Asian, Southeast Asian and Pacific Islanders organizations in a dozen cities will highlight the importance of immigrants’ rights to the LGBT community and increase awareness on immigration and racial justice. Over 250 people will participate in the actions, hoping to reach another 1,000 people.

Afterwards, Youth QUEST New Orleans at VAYLA New Orleans is hosting a two-day workshop.
> Day 1 will help young people understand immigration laws and deportation policies through story circles.
> Day 2 will connect their personal experiences to issues of immigration and deportation
