Calling anything the ‘coolest’ is always going to be controversial. And so when we unveiled our annual list of the world’s coolest neighbourhoods yesterday, it sent a lot of readers and commenters into a heated – but goodhearted – my-area’s-better-than-yours frenzy.

Some are miffed theirs didn’t make the cut, others surprised theirs did. Mainly, it seems we all feel a helluva lot more of affection for our neighbourhoods than usual right now (no doubt because we’ve all had to spend so much time hanging relatively close to home these past six months). And nowhere more so, it seems, than in Glasgow.

Their city’s number one hotspot this year was Dennistoun, which we ranked the eighth coolest neighbourhood in the world (taking into account locals’ answers in our annual Time Out Index survey, along with the opinions of our global network of editors and contributors).

Malcolm Jack, our Glasgow expert, praised this ‘secluded island’ in the city’s East End for ‘its sense of independence unlike any other corner of this city’. He also highlighted its affordable housing, top-notch pubs, thriving cultural life and array of community initiatives that have really stood out during lockdown.

Inevitably, some locals agreed wholeheartedly – while others took a more self-deprecating stance. Here are some of our favourite reactions from Twitter over the past 24 hours.
