In April 2012 a dodgy Chinese takeaway on rue Etienne Marcel mercifully made way for this trendy joint - La Penderie (literally meaning 'The Wardrobe', after the fashion showrooms that dot Etienne Marcel's side-streets). On the outside you'll find an 80-seater terrace over-looking the street; while inside, city hubbub gives way to exposed stone walls, industrial-chic light fittings, converted sewing machine tables and ever-changing art exhibitions by local artists.
On the plate expect lashings of comfort food like deep-fried cheese bites, burgers bursting with onions, cheese and sauce, and an alternately crackly and creamy Carambar (caramel) crème-brulée – all preferably washed down with the house cocktail, ‘Amour en Cage’ (pink champagne with an edible hibiscus flower).
Regular live concerts and DJ nights complete the offerings, making La Penderie one of the funkiest places around Châtelet for food, drink and merriment right now.
