Wonderful Sheffield balladeer - once a regular cohort of Jarvis Cocker and a collaborator with everybody from Elbow and Arctic Monkeys to Lisa-Marie Presley -plays from his splendid current LP, 'Standing at the Sky's Edge', which sees him shifting from his template of a twangtastic Roy Orbison/Johnny Cash hybrid, into dark and gnarly, groove-ridden blues/psychedelic rock, that recalls Mark Lanegan and even Noel Gallagher. A hefty back catalogue ensures plenty of swoon-worthy, noir-ish crooning, however, and Hawley's sharp onstage banter is an entertainment bonus.
