The tourist hoards are left behind at Au Pied du Sacré Cœur, a great French neighbourhood restaurant in Montmarte in the 18th. Plastic chairs draw people to the pretty private terrace as soon as the sun’s out. Inside remains faithful to the fuss-free French bistro traditions of large mirrors, solid hardwood chairs, plain white table linen, a little flower on each setting, and cosy lighting. The tried and tested are also favoured in Au Pied du Sacré Cœur’s kitchen. Rack of roast lamb with sage, langoustines, foie gras, pork loin with caramelised honey, marinated salmon, crème brulee, cheese board - the good value menu is a roll call of failsafe French classics. Daily specials are chalked up on black boards.
