Time Out says

4 out of 5 stars

Opened at the end of 2011, Helmut Newcake was the first place for 100% certified gluten-free pastries in Paris, and is the reference for the new generation of bakeries opening up around town. The location by the trendy Canal St-Martin is nestled among a slew of new eateries and coffee shops that are worth a visit. But those looking to enjoy authentic French pastry, like classic éclairs and lemon meringue tarts, can stop in and take a seat in the modern, yet cozy loft-style shop for a cup of coffee and a snack. From Wednesday to Saturday, owners François and Marie Tagliaferro offer inexpensive gluten-free lunch options whipped up my Marie, like simple soups, salads, and quiches (think rocket, quinoa, and smoked salmon). A €24 brunch on Sundays is the ultimate splurge for those with Celiac disease, featuring pancakes, eggs, ham or salmon, amongst other goodies, and yes, it’s all gluten-free, in case that wasn’t clear. Marie, who bakes all of the pastries, is gluten intolerant as well, so you can be bet she’s making sure there’s not an ounce of the allergen anywhere to be found. The bakery also stocks gluten-free goods from England not typically found in France, so do a bit of shopping while you’re at it.  And even if you aren’t a Celiac, those without allergies can still appreciate the well-executed pastries – you won’t even miss the wheat.
