Sol Semilla

If ‘veganism’ sounds like a bland and tasteless proposition to you, beware: Sol Semilla, the Bar des Artisans, may just change your mind. This jolly spot is home to a happy and good humoured veganism, which makes good use of super foods – those natural ingredients (copaiba, urucum, acai, acerola, purple corn, etc.) which are crammed with vitamins and minerals. These are also sold in the grocery store under the brand ‘Alimento Voy’. On the restaurant side, they toss salads, create colourful dishes, spice juices, spoon out delicious soups and produce amazing healthy desserts.

I believe you must approach this as an experience to include the other diners, the ambiance, the smell, sound and lighting which all enhances the enjoyment. The food is of course healthy and interesting. You start with two small glasses of liquid that was explained but I don't remember. This is part of the super-food aspect. Then you select from the short menu your meal. It is a warm and healthy environment but not a place to fill up for a small amount of money.

I'm not sure about the superfood reality but I did enjoy a lunch here and returned for a pot of their excellent tea.

The Timeout description of Sol Semilla aka Voy Alimento aka Bar des Artisans raised unmet expectations. We paid a very large price for a very small pile of adequate but uninspiring food. We were starving at the end of our meal. We felt exploited. Vegan food can be much much better than this & much less meagre. I always wondered why vegans looked so scraggy, now I know. They live in Paris & frequent substandard vegan restaurants. If this place was to add another name to the list, I'd suggest Le Anorexic Vegan. The only plus point was the lovely, lovely service. Thank you for lightening an otherwise disappointing experience. For those who want to experience vegan food at its best and most generous look no further than the Garden Cafe in Woodstock, USA
