What if we took the biggest thorn out of your side by settling in advance the most explosive debate of the Christmas season? Preceded by a reputation that is not always flattering (and certainly not deserved), the yule log is supposed to bring everyone together! The chefs at Galeries Lafayette Le Gourmet have each created an exclusive Christmas log, only available at Le Gourmet. Alongside seven randomly selected Time Out readers (Mansoura, Louka, Pauline, Emma, Laeren, Joris, and Rémi), we tested seven of these unique creations. And here are the top three we recommend to delight your entire table on the 24th!

The logs are exclusively available at Galeries Lafayette Le Gourmet from December 15, 2022.

Our 3 favorite logs

Cherry-Chestnut Log by Philippe Conticini

Let’s honor the masters first, with one of the most beloved pastry chefs in France – and worldwide –, Philippe Conticini. The man who revolutionized the Paris-Brest and invented the "cuddle cake" has created an airy log this year. Its glittering appearance, like a ball gown, sparkling like the most beautiful ornament on the tree – the one you display in the middle –, will for sure dazzle the whole family. We couldn't resist its very original composition. On one side, a light and mildly sweet chestnut mousse, enhanced with a touch of Armagnac, enough to delight Uncle but not too much to discourage the kids. On the other, a sour cherry confit, tangy and enhanced with yuzu, ginger, and vanilla. Light, very fruity, crispy, cuddly, in short: impeccable.

Christmas Dream by Jean-Paul Hévin

Christmas without chocolate ? That would be a sin! It's impossible to go wrong with the great chocolatier Jean-Paul Hévin, maker of the best macarons in Paris. In his Christmas log, there's something to delight chocolate enthusiasts while indulging those who are not so fond of it. So light that it won't weigh you down after the foie gras/smoked salmon team up for appetizers (no judgment), it combines a lively chocolate mousse – Chanchamayo Grand Cru from Peru for those who know – with a delicate heart. The creamy vanilla mousse coats the palate, and the pear cubes in a delicate jelly are a blast of freshness. For amateurs of the Poire Belle-Hélène, this is a potential hit.

Malmö Teddy Bear by L’Éclair de Génie

It was during a trip to the Far North – in Sweden exactly – that pastry chef Christophe Adam imagined Malmö, his little teddy bear mascot. Nestled in his cozy bed on this regressive Christmas log, he is sure to become the favorite of kids who will probably fight over the pleasure of biting his head. But this log from L’Éclair de Génie is also dangerously addictive for parents. A simple and readable dessert, with flavors designed to satisfy all types of sweet tooths. First, there's the generous and intensely vanilla-flavored whipped ganache, totally captivating. On the other side, a soft almond biscuit, an addictive pecan praline crunch, and a rich and tender caramel as only a Breton chef can imagine! The kind of log that nips any complaints around the table in the bud: pure pleasure.

Bonus for the next day

If you're looking for a cheeky addition to the Boxing Day brunch with leftover turkey, we've found this gargantuan brioche from the kings of babka, Babka Zana. A Christmas babka that pays homage to Mont-Blanc (the dessert, not the mountain) with a creamy halva (sesame) and vanilla filling, and another one with chestnut. Absolutely fantastic.

€35, for 6 people, at Galeries Lafayette Le Gourmet
