Pistachio Lovers by Yann Couvreur

1. Pistachio Lovers by Yann Couvreur

An expert in buttery creations, Yann Couvreur strikes again with a near perfect pistachio-based dessert. Both technical and decadent, it combines a soft biscuit, a light orange blossom-flavoured mousse and a pistachio-praline heart, divinely salted and roasted for our greatest pleasure. A true masterpiece of nuance, with just enough sweetness. It was love at first sight: we immediately fell for this exquisite yule log covered in butter yellow frosting and dotted with dried fruits. A free-for-all pistachio fest.

The Montaigne log by Pierre Hermé

2. The Montaigne log by Pierre Hermé

What a stunner. Hermé’s creation is a short little log decorated with Parisian Art Deco-style motifs with more than a hint of gingerbread — and a five star one at that, with accents of cinnamon, ginger and star anise blended in harmony. The show’s main event is a grapefruit compote center, turning this dessert into a feat of haute cuisine decorated with classic macaroons, a Hermé signature, dotting its surface. Festive enough to lift the mood of your perennially sulky cousin on Christmas Eve.

3. The BoSapin by Jean-Paul Hévin

Our friend Jean-Paul is a true VIP in the chocolate world: named “Meilleur Ouvrier de France” in 1986, a legendary figure in the field of Parisian chocolatiers, he’s the ultimate expert. This season, the maestro has taken a shot at blending heady dark chocolate with a decadent chestnut mousse (with yummy chestnut chunks) on top of the crunchiest almond biscuit. His very own magical touch: a thin layer of crème brûlée laced with hints of orange, creating an explosion of flavours. The ultimate treat for die-hard chocoholics.

4. The Sapinette by Dalloyau

Introducing Sapinette, a Christmas tree-shaped yule log with enigmatic features: its cheeky look will make it a sure hit with the kids, but rest assured this smiley dessert is suitable for all ages. Inside this cartoon-like creation, you’ll find an almond crunch, a madeleine biscuit, a vanilla mousse and a raspberry compote wrapped in a white chocolate coating with specks of nougatine. This family-friendly yule log, recommended for guests aged 7 to 77, is easy to slice evenly so no one feels left out. Perfect for big Xmas bashes.

L’Ebène de Noël from Chez Meunier
Chez Meunier

5. L’Ebène de Noël from Chez Meunier

There’s been no lazing around for Meunier as the countdown to Christmas Eve begins. The boulanger has created a timelessly elegant black yule log decorated with a chocolate forest and the word “Noël”, which means “Christmas” in French (because “Easter” would have been untimely). A pretty classic dessert that does the job nicely, it combines dark chocolate and milk chocolate mousses on a crunchy, crumble-inspired cacao biscuit with a touch of sea salt for added interest. This cute little log is also very reasonably priced, which is no mean feat in these times of inflation. Tasting notes: take it slow as this one is pretty hearty — there might even be some left for the neighbours.
