A handsome retreat between the picturesque Willamette River and lush Washington Park, Dossier is a place of shiny leather furnishings, glossy hardwood features and smart bedrooms. Everything from the chic desks with windows looking out across the city in the standard rooms to the lip-smackingly strong cocktails at the perfectly tiled bar screams sophistication. You won’t find many places as debonair as this to lay your head. 

Where is it? In the middle of Downtown Portland, close to all the major city sites and venues. 

Which room? The standard rooms are impressive but for extra space and guaranteed views bag a premium corner room. 

Time Out tip: Take full advantage of the hotel’s bike rental scheme so you can really explore the city. 

The Nines

The Nines

The former flagship HQ of the Mier & Frank department store chain, this 15-story high turn-of-the-century building is a historic landmark in Portland and a handsome one to boot. Behind the beautiful glazed terracotta detailing and gleaming rows of windows, it’s now home to luxury hotel The Nines. Each of its rooms oozes opulence with tufted ivory leather headboards, Tiffany blue velvet furnishings and crystal pendant lights. The communal rooms have the style of an old-school gentleman’s club with pool tables and Chesterfield sofas. Settle down in one to read one of the 2,000 books in the hotel library curated by the city’s famous books store Powell’s. Or take the elevator – the first to be installed in the city – to the eighth floor where you’ll find modern Asian dining spot Departure Restaurant with two outdoor decks and sweeping views of the city. 

Where is it? In the heart of Downtown Portland, a stone’s throw from Pioneer Square and the central business district.

Sentinel Hotel

This beautiful building has been home to a hotel for over a century and, constructed in 1909, it was one of the first places in the State to use Early Modern Viennese-influenced styles. The results are still stunning. The Sentinel has retained the impressive Sentinel statues on its roofline – from which it gets its name – glossy marble floors and intricately carved ceilings making it one of the grandest spots in the city. Its rooms are classic and elegant with forest green walls, leather armchairs and hardwood furnishings and each comes with a fitness kit. Fancy a steak? Inside, you’ll find all sorts of quirky features from colourful furnishings, a games room and walls covered in local art. The rooms have a cool motel vibe with colourful midcentury-modern-esque bedspreads and headboards and a fun magnetic board where you can stick up souvenirs from your trip and really make the space your own. If you want a taste of Portland’s uber-cool side, a stay at Jupiter Next will introduce you to the arty, bohemian atmosphere the City of Roses is known for. The sister hotel of the og Jupiter – which is famous for housing one of Portland’s best music venues The Doug Fir Lounge – this new boutique spot has a slick concrete-lined lobby with comfy corner sofas, alfresco terraces and an atmospheric bar with an open fire. Which room? We love the Next Level X rooms, which are that bit higher up for better views. 

Time Out tip: The lobby also doubles as tropical bar Hey Love, which describes itself as a ‘hidden garden and a house party, all wrapped into one’.  

The Royal Sonesta

Looking for something a bit different? You’ll find plenty of surprises at The Royal Sonesta. Every room is impeccably decorated with plenty of unconventional touches from the ruby red lobby with velvet armchairs and a white fireplace in the shape of a Chinese pagoda to the guest rooms with flying mallard duck wallpaper and geometric carpet. There’s an on-site spa if you require a bit of pampering, a fitness centre and a gastropub serving up fresh-as-it-gets farm-to-table produce.

‘Not for your average business traveller’, reads one review of Portland’s Ace Hotel and they’d be right. Founded in the neighbouring state of Washington, Ace Hotel has a knack for picking some of the most cutting-edge locations for its spaces and Portland’s is no exception. This is an eccentric spot for people who want to experience the wonderful weirdness that Oregan’s best-known city is famous for. The rooms are of the rustic-industrial variety with bare brick walls, vintage furnishings, Pendleton Woolen Mills blankets, Tivoli radios and monochrome murals decorating the walls. While others are done up in a boutique hostel style with bunkbeds for larger groups. Each morning a complimentary continental breakfast is served in The Pantry and you can grab dinner at Kenny & Zuke’s. 

Where is it? Right in the heart of the Pearl District opposite Powell’s – one of the largest and best independent bookstores in the world. 

Which room? We love the superior deluxe corner which has a king bed, plenty of space and a record player with vintage vinyl. 

Time Out tip: Stumptown Coffee is considered one of the best coffee roasters in Portland, and it has a cafe right downstairs. Get on it! 

Hotel Lucia

Hotel Lucia

Housed in one of Portland’s buildings of historic interest, this 1909 block is now filled with the colourful interiors and chic surroundings of Hotel Lucia. With walls housing the largest permanent collection of work from Pulitzer Prize-winning photographer David Hume Kennerly, handsome ochre furnishings and fireplaces decorated with vintage cameras, careful thought has been put into the look and feel of the place. This continues on into the rooms which are filled with gleaming mahogany furniture and warm colours as well as squishy robes, slippers, and a Bluetooth speaker for entertainment. Every room has a fitness kit or grab complimentary fitness class passes. 

Where is it? In the middle of Downtown, round the corner from the vibrant Pearl District and the Old Town.

You can’t miss the huge neon sign on the side of this historic 1908 building welcoming you to the Woodlark. The building was a rare example of baroque revival architecture in the Pacific Northwest and you can still see its influence in the coffered lobby ceiling and a French mansard roof.
