The neoclassical former stock exchange – now headquarters of Porto’s chamber of commerce – was built on the site of the monastery of the neighbouring Igreja de São Francisco. Guided tours (every half hour) are the only way to see the interior of this masterpiece of 19th-century Portuguese architecture. It is worth a visit just for the neo-Moorish ballroom, designed by civil engineer Gustavo Adolfo Gonçalves e Sousa with panache, if not good taste.

A lovely guided tour is available to visit Portugal's former stock exchange building. My favourite part was appreciating the architecture and design of each room we entered. It was incredible to see such grandeur with the chandeliers, the amount of gold in each room, and the paintings on the walls.

It was also nice that there was a guided tour because it did help to learn more about the building and Portugal's history. As much as I like going at my own pace when visiting tourist attractions, this guided tour allowed me to appreciate the design all while listening to a guide explain the history to us.

I was equally amazed by how well kept everything was inside! Things seem to look in pretty good condition and really showcases the epitome of the Portugal empire back then.
