“Glitterbox is euphoria” – Defected Records boss Simon Dunmore on his wild and wonderful party

“Glitterbox is euphoria” – Defected Records boss Simon Dunmore on his wild and wonderful party

What’s the deal with Glitterbox?“Glitterbox is a party based around euphoria – the feeling you used to get from house and disco parties back in the day. The party is all about the connection between the DJ and the crowd, which we think has been missing over the last few years.”  How come it’s evolved so fast?“It’s just simply down to great music, great DJs and great people. When you get that combination then it’s always going to be a great party. Everybody says, ‘what’s the secret to the success?,’ and yet it’s the most obvious thing in the world to me.”  How does the Glitterbox crowd differ from your Defected Records parties?“The Glitterbox crowd is broader in every aspect. Broader in sex, people’s sexual preferences, colour, age. Defected is a serious house label, based around sounds that the house scene may be enjoying at that moment in time, whereas Glitterbox is based around disco and classic house, which I think is more universal and has greater and wider appeal. There is some synergy: I see people at our Glitterbox parties that I also see at our Defected parties. Disco is enjoying a real revival and I think that just brings a more diverse crowd.” Photo: Gavin Mills Photography Glitterbox is at  Kaufleuten, Zurich, on April 14 and August 4.

The feelgood party of the summer? Miami Beach’s Do Not Sit on the Furniture is heading to Zurich

The feelgood party of the summer? Miami Beach’s Do Not Sit on the Furniture is heading to Zurich

Granted, the name ‘Do Not Sit on the Furniture’ sounds like a grumpy demand from a family member, but don’t be fooled: this epic party might just be the highlight of your summer. On Saturday July 6, Do Not Sit on the Furniture lands at The Tree Festival on Zürichhorn, and frankly, this is the most excited we’ve felt about a party in years. What’s so special? Well, Do Not Sit is a comprehensive celebration of the history of dance music, meaning it’ll appeal to both newbies on the scene and anyone who grew up in the early ’90s as dance music as we know it emerged. The nights are run by a man you can trust: US DJ Behrouz Nazari, one of the leading figures of America’s West Coast house music movement and a man whose nights became so legendary that they warranted the opening of the Do Not Sit club in Miami Beach in 2013. Over half a decade later, Behrouz and his wife Megan are translating the spirit of the Miami club to a Zurich setting for the first time (although Behrouz has played in Switzerland under his own name before). ‘Do Not Sit fuses my 25 years of experience in dance music,’ Behrouz says. ‘We play music that touches your soul, and brings communities from across the globe together.’  ‘The community we have created in Miami Beach has led to everyone asking us to put on Do Not Sit parties in their cities,’ says Behrouz. ‘Zurich has always been one of my favourite cities to play in and I’m truly humbled with all the support and love I have been getting from locals.’ Do Not

Dubfire: 'Street Parade crowds are some of the best to play for'

Dubfire: 'Street Parade crowds are some of the best to play for'

As he gets ready to play the annual Zurich party, US electronic music pioneer Dubfire chats to us about Swiss fans, festivals and new beats. How do you prepare to play big events like Zurich’s Street Parade? My sets differ depending on the type of event – whether I’m playing a festival or a club, for instance – but also according to the size and location, since crowds express themselves in different ways, depending on the country or culture of the people. But events like the Street Parade in Zurich are a different animal entirely: it’s free, open to all ages and smack in the city centre. So the crowds tend to be overly enthusiastic and some of the best to play for! What’s best about Swiss audiences? I’ve been playing here since my early Deep Dish years and have obviously watched as the electronic music scene – as well as dance music culture – has evolved to great new heights. The promoters in particular have been instrumental in educating the crowds on the finer, more techno-rooted talent as opposed to EDM acts, so that’s been a huge boost in this territory for our genre. When can we expect new music? I’ve been quite busy with my upcoming ‘EVOLV’ album project and full production audio-visual show, which kicks off in April 2020. I’ve also just wrapped a special remix for Chris Liebing, which will be out on Mute and is quite a departure from my typical sound and more in line with my indie roots, so I’m excited about that release. And more remix work from me is inevitable this

Three newcomers in May that do sharing plates

Three newcomers in May that do sharing plates

'Tis the season for rooftop bar openings – but with sun hardly guaranteed you're better off heading to one of these three hot new indoor openings and ordering all of the serving plates instead. It's all about sharing these days. What began in convivial Italian restaurants like Polpo is now the order of the day - so get down to these places pronto, or risk going to places that opened LAST month. You have been warned. Fox on the Green, Islington   Serving the local community since 1872, this Islington pub has just reopened, with a new contemporary makeover. While traditional cask ales and British pub food return to the menu, small plates of tapas and a ‘burgers and burritos’ section tell a more modern tale. The refurb is all thanks to the Stonegate Pub Company, who ploughed £250,000 into the pub. Most importantly, there's a stonking weekday happy hour (5pm-8pm) with all cocktails 2-for-1. 1 Islington Green, Islington, N1 2XH Cielo Blanco, Exmouth Market Exmouth Market’s intimate vibe feels lifted straight from a rom-com. The area is full of hot new openings, many of which spill onto the pedestrianised street – and the likes of Coin Laundry, with its novel '70s theme, get a lot of our hard-earned cash. But newest to the area is Cielo Blanco, with colourful Mexican food and some strong tequila cocktails. Based on the informal streetfood of Oaxaca, the menu is split into ‘fresh and fast’ and sharing boards, cooked in the traditional barbacoa (barbecue) style. Don’t miss the outdo
