“I really love char siu. It’s been my one and only comfort food since childhood. But It’s hard to find in Thailand so I came up with an idea to open my own restaurant.” That’s the inspiration behind the Hong Kong-style roasted pork specialty restaurant Kwong Charsiu in bustling Chatuchak Market. Thai-Hongkongese founder Kitti “Danny” Kwong, who has lived in Thailand since he was a teenager, quit his job as an event organizer to put up this food venture. It took him around six months to discover the right location and develop the recipe in consultation with relatives from Hong Kong. HKETOKwong Charsiu Some may say that there is char siu in Thailand, in the guise of popular street food kao moo dang or roasted red pork with rice. But Danny begs to disagree. “They are different,” he insists. “Moo dang’s taste relies on the sweet gravy it comes with, but char siu focuses on well-marinated pork that can be eaten with rice or noodles without the gravy.”  Danny concedes, however, that his house-crafted char siu had to be adjusted for the Thai preference. “To run a restaurant in Thailand, your food must cater to the local palate. Welcome back to our series “We are Hong Kong”.  In this issue, we will introduce Dicky Ip, the co-owner of Zendio Dawa, who goes all out to strengthen the art toy community in Thailand. Photo: Tanisorn Vongsoonton Dicky has taken up art toys since his first participation in a Hong Kong toys fair in 2016.  He was enticed by the uniqueness of designer toys produced in limited edition.  He met the creator of “Byron”, Ms Shoko Nakazawa, at the event and chatted with her to gain insight into the background of the character and the designer herself.  “Byron” is a Japanese-style Sofubi. The following year, he flew to Japan to join various events where he got to know many more Japanese designers, most of them specialising in “Sofubi”, which was made from soft vinyl and well-known among Japanese toy collectors. Photo: Tanisorn Vongsoonton His strong passion eventually propelled him to embark on a reselling business.  Without any concrete profit plan, he delved deeply into this mesmerising universe while helping his customers for sought-after items at numerous toy events at the same time.  The demand for designer toys was particularly high from Thai toy collectors, he said. “At that time, some Thai customers didn’t know how to get access to overseas toy events, such as those in Hong Kong or Mainland China.  They needed someone to help them purchase toys in these events.  I also gained some experiences by helping a Thai friend who ran an art toy shop for shipments of toys to Thailan

The Songkran celebrations at Siam Paragon take on a different tweak this year as  the world-class shopping destination injects an international spin on the traditional Thai water-splashing festival by bringing in the works of globally-acclaimed British pop artist, Philip Colbert.  Siam Paragon Ultrasonic Water Festival 2024 Colbert, who is known for creating quirky sculptures featuring a cartoon lobster alter ego, has collaborated with Siam Paragon on Lobster Wonderland, an exhibition that sees these playful crustacean characters taking over Siam Paragon Ultrasonic Water Festival 2024 at outdoor space Parc Paragon. The pop artist has reimagined his lobster persona especially for Thailand, imbibing his sculptures with the lively spirit of Songkran and iconic Thai cultural elements. What’s a Songkran celebration without the parties? The Thai New Year is synonymous to three days of crazy water battles, non-stop dancing, and, of course, having drinks with friends. This award-winning campaign was first introduced digitally in 2021 and is being launched on-the-ground in Thailand for the first time during the 2024 Songkran holidays.
