Black Lives Matter!

As we enter Black History Month, we look back to the struggles of the past in order to help us move the struggle for justice forward. In 2016, the police have continued their killings of innocent people, acting as judge and juror for brown and black people on a daily basis. Oscar Grant, Mike Brown, Tamir Rice, Mario Woods, Nicholas Robertson, Antonio Zambrano Montes, Jessie Hernandez, Rekiya Boyd, and countless others have shown the police to be agents of terror that are unaccountable to the public. This is not a matter of just some bad cops who are misbehaving, or a lack of proper department training and oversight, although these things are major problems. The police are the enforcers of a system that seeks to maintain mass incarceration as an answer to social and economic inequality. If we are to counter this and build a more just system, we must come together and demand an end to police terror and a start to community control over law enforcement.

Hear from local Black liberation activists who will explain the origins and future of the Black Lives Matter movement.
