Of, With, and By: Women in Art opens at the Latino Center of Art & Culture.
Celebrating International Women’s Day, this exhibition honors the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women. Visual artists include: Sonya Fe, Jesse Vasquez, Andres Alvarez, Bryan Valenzula, Mike Rodriguez, Miguel Paz, Glenda Drew, Ella Diaz, Ruby Chacon, Aida Lizalde, Ruben Revelles, Marissa Lopez, Inertia DeWitt, Ramona Garcia, Lacey Levinson LaPointe, Sarah Marie Hawkins. Performing artists include: Betty Sanchez, Martha Kight, Inertia DeWitt, Miguel Paz and BoYee Nataranja.
The public is invited to meet the artists and view their work at a free opening reception on Friday, March 10, from 6:00 – 9 p.m. at the Latino Center of Art & Culture. The public is invited to a free poetry and performance party on Sunday, March 26, from 4 – 9 p.m. The public is also invited to a free closing reception (date and time to be determined).
The Latino Center of Art & Culture, founded in 1972 as La Raza Bookstore, is a multi-disciplinary cultural center and public space serving the Sacramento Community by offering Latino/Chicano and Native arts programming. ** PARENTS PLEASE NOTE ** This show depicts images and themes that deal directly with all aspects of womanhood - including mensturation, domestic abuse, rape. Each artist who dealt with these things did so from a place of personal experience. The work is not sensationalistc, but these themes are dealt with in a very honest manner.
