Join us for another Sac Science Distilled event! You'll hear short, idea-centered talks from two local experts in the sciences. After the talks, we'll have a lively discussion that brings science into context for everyday life.

Our speakers will be Dr. Brenna Kiniry http://gsm.ucdavis.edu/spotlight-story/brenna-kiniry and Dr. Lauren Hirao http://gsm.ucdavis.edu/spotlight-story/lauren-hirao of UC Davis Microbiology.

Brenna will discuss: Is there a cure for HIV? Do we need one if HIV-infection is manageable with drug therapy? My presentation will aim to provide answers these questions by exploring the reasoning behind the cure movement, current strategies, the potential for success and risks involved.

Lauren will discuss: After three decades of research there is no licensed HIV vaccine. Are we any closer to a successful vaccine? I’ll discuss what makes HIV a challenging vaccine target, why traditional approaches fail, and the innovations in vaccine design that are driving the field forward.
