We are working toward the goal of giving younger children a voice in family courts regarding their wishes for custody and visitation. AB 2098 would allow children ages 10 - 14 to speak to the family court judge in their parents' divorce or separation case. We led the charge back in 2010 to pass historic legislation with then-Assemblywoman Fiona Ma that created California's current law, which allows children 14 and older to speak to a judge. We know that this law has helped some abused children be protected from abuse and reunited with their safe parent. This important new bill would enable younger California children the same right to speak to the judge that those 14 and older have, and it will help reduce Adverse Childhood Experiences, which the Legislature resoundingly supports.
