Tubman House says
Right here in our own Sacramento community, there is a law on the books that makes it illegal for men, women, and families experiencing homelessness to sleep outside on the streets. But when our city is short a thousand shelter beds and housing waitlists are months or even years long, where is one supposed to go to sleep? The issue is simple-- people experiencing homelessness are still people and all people should have the right to rest. This simple truth still seems too muddled in money and politics for adults to get it, so why not let our children teach us for a moment?

The right to rest movement is a great way to introduce children to city government, protest, and the complexities of addressing homelessness. Children easily recognize the common humanity we share with our sisters and brothers sleeping in the cold. Let them know they have a voice! Come join the Children's Rally on Tuesday, February 9th at 5 pm.

Children are welcome to attend the council meeting at 6 pm and speak during public comments. It is empowering to see that our representatives are indeed charged to listen to our concerns and that we are part of the process. A short speech or even a few sentence expressing support allow children a voice in our community's approach.

To scaffold children's understanding and a successful first experience, we invite children 5 to 12 years old to a free teach in at Art Beast on Friday, February 5th from 4 to 5:30. This very gentle introduction to the issue and to the use of protest to drive social change will be led by experienced elementary teachers with long experience working with children, youth, and adults overcoming homelessness. We will make signs, consider speaking, and practice a few chants.

To register for the teach in, please call Art Beast at 916-441-1233.

We hope to see you and your little ones out there!
