Best brunch in San Antonio

San Antonio’s oldest Mexican restaurant (it opened in 1932!) has kept with the times and now offers a fantastic brunch menu every Sunday. Chef Maldonado serves elevated Mexican cuisine such as a poached egg benedict with chipotle hollandaise. Other great plates at this historic restaurant include the barbacoa enchiladas accented by Oaxaca cheese, chicken enchiladas in mole sauce, and steak and eggs migas.

Spice up your weekend brunch experience at Cappy’s Restaurant. This new American spot serves fine dining dishes like truffled scrambled eggs, lump crab, and butter-poached lobster tail. On sunny days, invite friends and spread out on the outdoor patio to share brunch specialties like Texas-style pot roast, fried gulf shrimp with a chipotle remoulade, and steak frites.

Set in the historic Pearl Administration Building is Cured at Pearl, a unique restaurant best-known for their artful charcuterie boards full of cured items like apple jalapeno pork rillettes, smoked pig heart, and lamb pastrami, all of which can be accompanied by cheese from local farms. The brunch menu caters to adventurous foodies with dishes like pig cheek poutine, chicken and doughnuts drizzled in jalapeno syrup, pumpkin chili, and gumbo that you can pair with cocktails like a Mountain Mary, made with moonshine, pickled okra, and celery salt.

The Magnolia Pancake Haus aims to make the best buttermilk pancakes in the world, so it’s no wonder Guy Fieri made the trip to this hot spot in 2011 as part of Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives. The packed menu is full of specialty French toasts, egg benedicts, and waffles (some with bacon baked right in!), but visiting Magnolia without tasting the pancakes may be an unofficial crime. Sure, the buttermilk is a classic, but try something new like pancakes filled with chocolate chips, bacon, apples and cinnamon, or Texas pecans.

Paloma Blanca stands out from San Antonio's other Tex-Mex restaurants by offering a gluten-free and paleo menu. On Saturdays and Sundays, dive into brunch offerings like chilaquiles Distrito Federal, a ribeye steak sprinkled with tortilla chips and covered in a spicy tomatillo salsa, or the Molletes Coayacan plate, comprised of Mexican bread cut in half and covered in black refried beans and queso Monterrey before being baked to a delicious crisp.

Everything from Feast’s decor to its food presentation is chic, so if you’re looking to dress up and show out for a Sunday brunch, Feast is exactly where you want to be. Start your meal with a Bloody Marie, a Bloody Mary with a twist (chipotle and habanero house-infused vodka), or a grand mimosa, made of guava juice and champagne. Then order brunch delicacies like handkerchief crepes with bourbon apples and smoked pecans, a fried egg sandwich with chorizo, or an order of almond pistachio French toast dunked in orange and cinnamon and topped with blackberries.

Combine the delicious taste of carne asada and eggs with the beautiful views of the River Walk, and you’ve got Acenar. This Mexican restaurant serves up brunch dishes like Mexican-style omelettes, bolillos (Mexican bread) with refried beans, eggs, and chorizo, delightful chilaquiles, and eggs and refried beans on tostadas. While most opt to sit on the patio to enjoy San Antonio’s warm weather and a location next to the river, if the weather’s poor, you won’t be disappointed with Acenar’s contemporary and stylish indoor dining room.

How does fried chicken topped with American cheese, smashed between two pieces of caramel moonshine French toast and drizzled with jalapeno maple syrup sound? Like a delicious heart attack you’ll want to try. Mash’d is spinning the brunch game on its head with some good-natured rebellion toward breakfast favorites. They’re stuffing omelettes with TX Kobe beef patties, turning avocado toast into pizza, and deconstructing eggs benedict in cast iron skillets. With a killer line up of moonshine-based cocktails, you’re sure to have a good time at Mash’d.

This charming brunch spot is known for having an amazing coffee and wine bar and an outdoor patio, which is why it’s full of locals every weekend. The menu covers the basics like waffles, pancakes, and omelettes, and offers healthier options like a smoked salmon scramble. If you’ve ever wondered what Dr. Seuss meant by green eggs and ham, worry no more. Candlelight has a playful dish of green eggs and ham with the eggs scrambled in pesto.

Mi Tierra was a three-table café for early-rising farmers and workers for nearly 80 years. Today, owners Pedro and Cruz Cortez’s little café is one of the most popular Tex-Mex spots in San Antonio and it’s grown quite a bit. Brunch is served 24/7, so whether it’s 2am or 10pm, you can enjoy fan favorites like chorizo Mexicano con huevo (scrambled eggs with the Cortez family recipe of homemade Mexican sausage), menudo, and chilaquiles with pork tips in a red sauce. If you’re short on time for brunch, grab a Mexican pastry (or five!) from their on-site panaderia.
