The best Airbnbs in San Diego, at a glance:

Who makes the cut? While we might not stay in and review every Airbnb featured, we've based our list on our expert knowledge of the destination covered, editorial reviews, user reviews, hotel amenities and in-depth research to find you the best stays. Which neighborhood is best to stay in San Diego?

It depends on what kind of trip you’re after. Mission Beach is hard to beat for a classic San Diego stay, with the beach and bay on your doorstep, plus restaurants, coffee shops and Belmont Park within walking distance. University Heights is a good pick if you want a more local feel, with an eclectic mix of restaurants, bars and cafés and easy access to Hillcrest and Balboa Park. North Park is another great option for foodies and nightlife, with plenty of restaurants, coffee shops and bars, while Golden Hill offers a quieter, residential feel just minutes from downtown and Balboa Park. And if it’s the beach you’re really here for, Mission Beach is the obvious choice.

Do I need a car when visiting San Diego?

San Diego is sprawling, so whether you need a car depends largely on where you’re staying and what you want to see. If you’re based in Little Italy or the Gaslamp Quarter, you can get around much of the city using public transport and rideshares. But if you’re staying in a beach neighbourhood and want to explore places like La Jolla, Torrey Pines and Balboa Park, having a car will make life much easier. If you do hire one, look for Airbnbs with free driveway parking, a surprisingly useful perk when you’re exploring the city by car.

Are Airbnbs in San Diego pet-friendly?

Absolutely. San Diego is famously dog-friendly, so you’ll find plenty of accommodation that welcomes four-legged friends. Ocean Beach is particularly good for dogs thanks to its famous Dog Beach, where pups can run around in the sand and splash in the Pacific. If you’re bringing your pooch, check the individual Airbnb rules before booking, as policies vary.

Do San Diego Airbnbs have air conditioning?

Not always. San Diego’s famously mild climate means plenty of older coastal homes, particularly around Pacific Beach and Ocean Beach, rely on ocean breezes rather than central air conditioning. That can be lovely most of the year, but August and September can be seriously warm, so it’s worth checking the amenities carefully if you’re visiting then. If A/C is a must, opt for one of the modern properties in this guide that specifically lists air conditioning rather than assuming it comes as standard.
