12 great reasons to visit the suburbs

Bridge and tunnel has a negative connotation for some, but here in the Bay Area, we're lucky to have some pretty spectacular 'burbs. We've headed North, South and East and picked our favorite spots to visit, shop and explore just outside of San Francisco.

1. Muir Woods, Marin County  This stunning redwood forest is world famous and for good reason. Put a visit to Muir Woods on your to-do list ASAP if you haven't been (or heck, even if you have).

2. The Ikea in Emeryville  We're only human. Emeryville offers SF's closest Swedish furniture fix.

3. Wine Country, Sonoma and Napa County  Let's be honest, one of the many reasons we decided to live in San Francisco was its proximity to America's best wine.

4. Half Moon Bay  From the gorgeous beaches and award-winning breweries to brunch at the Ritz, this charming coastal village is just 30 quick minutes away.

5. All the amusement Parks  We're partial to Great America in Santa Clara, but Six Flags Discovery Kingdom in Vallejo is just as much of a thrill. If you're looking for a bit of a road trip, the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk is a nostalgic NorCal classic.

6. Cal Performances  UC Berkeley's performance series brings big and unexpected names to the East Bay on the regular.

7. West Marin County  Take a self or guided tour of the region's organic farms and small businesses, including a tasty stop at Cowgirl Creamery.

8. Fresh air at Lake Chabot, Castro Valley  This 315-acre lake is home to great hiking, boating, picnicking, and according to recent news, a baby bald eagle chick.

9. Malls  Big, beautiful malls with parking lots and chain restaurants. We don't want to shop there all the time, but once or twice a year, we could use an Orange Julius or an Awesome Blossom.

10. Delicious local food factories  It's-It and See's Candy both have intoxicating factories on the Peninsula, and the Jelly Belly tour in Fairfield is also worth a trip.

11. Berkeley Botanical Garden  This century-old 34-acre garden is truly gorgeous and an especially peaceful section of the Bay Area.

12. Dinner at The French Laundry in Yountville  This wine-country dining destination is one of the country's best restaurants and could be one of your best meals—if you can get a reservation.
