6 things you need to know about celebrating 4/20 in San Francisco

April 20th has different meaning to different types of people. For may folks in the Bay, April 20th is also known in countercultures circles as the official day to celebrate (and smoke a whole lot of) marijuana. If you plan to join in the local 4/20 fun, here's what you'll need to know:

1. Some say that the weed term "4:20" actually originated just over the Golden Gate in San Rafael in 1971. A group of kids planned to meet at 4:20pm to located a secret crop of marijuana plants—that they never found—and the term "4:20" became a common code for pot smoking, as is the date, April 20th. Forty-five years later, 4/20 is still a thing, and a big thing in San Francisco.

2. The biggest 4/20 gathering will be at Hippie Hill in Golden Gate Park. People will gather there all day (just like they do every day!), but obviously 4:20pm is the weed-equivalent of the New Year's Eve ball drop. Be warned: Years past have gotten a bit out of control, with glass bottle throwing and violent robberies. SFPD will be out in full force to make sure everything stays calm, and it's best to stick in a group and keep your wits about you.

3. An organized clean-up of Hippie Hill will start at 5pm and volunteers are always welcome, high or otherwise.

4. Haight Street will also transform into a smoke-filled sidewalk of giggles and munchies. People-watching will be extra-spectacular on Wednesday.

5. Slim's is hosting a 420 "Gathering of the Tribe" show, featuring Moonalice and the Doobie Decibel System. Every attendee gets a free psychedelic poster and hours of jam-band joy.

6. Those looking for a more mellow 4/20 experience might want to check out the sunset bonfire at Ocean Beach. The crowds are welcoming, the view can't be beat and snacks taste even better when we're barefoot in the sand (and, you know, celebrating).
