How to celebrate St. Patrick's Day in San Francisco

Boston, Savannah and Chicago aren’t the only U.S. cities that go big when it comes to St. Patrick’s Day. San Francisco loves green (organic, small-batch) beer as much as our friends farther east. Here’s the scoop on where to get lucky in the city by the Bay.

Saint Patrick’s Day Parade and Celebration Sat Mar 14
The annual parade starts at 2nd and Market at 11:30am, although folks will be lining the sidewalks before dawn. (If you want a prime viewing spot, do as the early birds do.) The parade will make its way down to Civic Center Plaza, where an Irish extravaganza (live music, food and plenty of beer) will last until 5pm. Public transportation is advised, both because parking will be near impossible and it allows us all to safely enjoy a drink or four.

Aventine Fri Mar 13
There will be a line around the block to get into Aventine’s annual party, located in the alley right next to the bar. Stiff drinks, DJs, food trucks and every preppy person just off work in the FiDi will be there in their North Face fleece. Get your high-fiving arm and liver ready!

The Irish Bank Sat Mar 14 and Tue Mar 17
This is our number one pick for celebrating the big day, either after the parade or on the holiday itself. The timeless Irish bar throws big bashes in its private alley, complete with fantastic live music and a friendly crowd. This popular St. Patrick’s Day spot is also a great place to meet new people (we know several tales of true love that originated here).

Ireland’s 23
Ireland’s 32 is, in a word, legit. Filled with Irish ex-pats, this Richmond District bar is named for all 32 counties in Ireland (including the ones up north). Irish activist posters line the walls, and the bar is staffed by salty bartenders unimpressed with your leprechaun top hat.

Kells
The whole week leading up to March 17 is celebrated in full force at this bilevel bar on the outskirts of North Beach. Kells employs very nice bartenders but has the tendency to attract some ornery drinkers. Go early, leave early and you’ll be sure to have a great time.

The Chieftan
A tourist favorite, this South of Market bar is a wee bit cheesy, but that’s more or less what we’re looking for on St. Patrick’s Day. The Chieftan probably wins the award for having the healthiest food and cleanest bathrooms of all the Irish bars in San Francisco.

United Irish Cultural Center of San Francisco
Few San Franciscans have ever been to this old-school Irish community hall waaaaay out by the SF Zoo. Inside you’ll find a massive banquet space; downstairs, an Irish pub with a small small stage. Home to community events, political fundraisers and multi-generational Irish-American San Franciscans, the UICC hosts an array of St. Patrick’s Day events. Following Saturday’s parade, head over for a corned beef and cabbage dinner accompanied by live (and lively) Irish music. On Sunday, return for an all-day block party featuring music, dancing, and kids’ games. Come March 17, the UICC transforms into one big party with a ton o’ food, live music and dancing with old, drunk Irish men. Emerald Isle fans can also check out Celtic music, a discussion on Irish issues and much, much more.
