San Francisco fog is harvested and turned into vodka for Hangar One's Fog Point

Leave it to Hangar One to come up with the most genius vodka idea since the perfect pink Cosmo. The popular Alameda-based distiller has created vodka that is actually made from real San Francisco fog. Yep, we can finally catch a buzz from Karl

Working with a sustainable water and fog-researching non-profit called FogQuest, Hangar One uses a low energy mesh technology to harvest fog from the Outer Sunset, Sutro Tower, El Sobrante and the Berkeley Hills. The whole process actually eases the burden on California's dwindling water supply, especially after we've suffered such an agonizing drought. So not only are we getting to sip well-made vodka created from the fog directly over (or upon) our heads, but Hangar One's Fog Point vodka is environmentally sound.

The vodka process is pretty simple. Wine is distilled until it's 190 proof. Water (or fog water) is used to bring the vodka down to a drinkable 80 proof. Hangar One charmingly explains, "we installed our very own fog catchers to turn fog into fresh water. This water is then blended with vodka distilled from premium wine sourced from a sustainable vineyard on the Central Coast. This revolutionary experiment yields an extraordinarily crisp, pure, and gluten free sipping vodka with elegant hints of pear, citrus, and honeysuckle."

The process of turning fresh fog into fresh water is certainly more involved than turning a tap. As a result, Hangar One only released 2,500 bottles of Fog Point. The fog vodka is now sold out in retail stores, but discerning drinkers can still order a Fog Martini at Epic Steak, the Cliff House, Hog Island Oyster Company, and Foreign Cinema. Buyer beware: a Fog Martini will run you $43. Any takers?
