Where to break up in San Francisco

Relationships end. It happens to everyone. If you’ve decided to part ways with the old ball and chain dragging you down, it’s best to do so face-to-face. While an in-person dumping is the most terrifying method, most would agree it’s unkind to cut ties via text or e-mail. These local spots will provide the appropriate atmosphere for finally mustering the courage to say, “It’s not you, it’s me.”

Atlas Cafe

This cute, caffeinated hotspot in the Mission offers terrific coffee and snacks, as well as 20 witnesses, on any given day. Tables inside or on the back patio grant a bit of privacy, but are close enough to other patrons should one require back up. The atmosphere lends itself to a peaceful goodbye and civilized handshake. Plus, Trick Dog is right across the street for a stiff drink after the deed is done.

Palm House

Of all the Union Street watering holes, Palm House is one of the most adult. The sophisticated spot is ideal for a friendly goodbye. Also, the staff is talented at subtly handling awkward situations. Bonus: Once the news has been broken, you can both part ways and find a rebound date at any one of the many singles bars nearby.

Japanese Tea Garden

For the Zen dumper, there’s no better place to let go of a lover than at the Japanese Tea Garden. Located in the heart of the serene Golden Gate Park, the garden is a tranquil oasis of peace and whispering, where no one would dare yell, “Is there someone else!?!” Instead, each of you can meditate on your failed relationship and learn from it. Alternatively, Lincoln Avenue is right there for a quick getaway should you lose control of the situation.

Crissy Field

There are a ton of benefits to breaking up with someone at Crissy Field. First of all, it’s a gorgeous reminder of the beautiful city in which we reside. Second, a walk and a talk requires no direct eye contact. (Plus, any awkward crying will be drowned out by the sound of the crashing waves.) And each of you can clear your heads and your hearts with a long solo stroll afterward. Finally, should anything get out of hand, park rangers are on hand.

Dirty Habit

This sexy rooftop bar within a downtown hotel might be a great place to meet your match, but it’s also a terrific locale to dump a mismatch. The lively atmosphere and gorgeous crowd allow you to quickly break the news before immediately moving on. One of you can politely say adieu and head out the door into Union Square while the other stays, gets tipsy and goes home with someone in town for a convention at the Moscone Center. It’s a win-win.
